Target: Students will discuss lobbyists and interest groups and their influence on law making. Students will also learn about how Congress is a representative democracy that balances public needs with personal gain. By the end of the period students should be able to answer the following questions.


  • How do lobbyists and interest groups influence senators' and representatives' decisions?


  • What are the two conflicting desires that affect American democracy?


  • Can Congress be too responsive to the interests of the people?


  • Does the nature of Congress predispose it to continually increase the scope of the public sector?
